CHICAGO (AP) — When Stan Mikita got back together with the Chicago Blackhawks Alex Lewis Jersey , it was clear how much the reconciliation meant to the Hall of Fame forward.
He became a team ambassador, and then got a bronze statue outside the United Center. He was a regular at home games, drawing loud cheers when he was shown on the videoboard, often with former teammate Bobby Hull right beside him.
“I was proud to wear the Indianhead uniform for 22 years,” Mikita said when he was honored before a 2008 home game.
Made it look good, too.
The Blackhawks lost one of the most revered figures in franchise history when Mikita died Tuesday. The former captain, who helped Chicago to the 1961 Stanley Cup title, was 78.
Mikita’s family announced his death in a statement released by the team. No further details were provided, but he had been in poor health after being diagnosed with Lewy body dementia — a progressive disease that causes problems with thinking, movement, behavior and mood.
“He was surrounded by his loving family whom he fiercely loved,” the family said in the statement. “Details of planned services will be released when they become available. We respectfully ask for privacy at this time.”
Mikita spent his entire career with Chicago, beginning with his NHL debut in 1959 and running through his retirement after playing 17 games in the 1979-80 season. He is the Blackhawks’ career leader for assists (926), points (1,467) and games played (1,394) Youth JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey , and is second to Hull with 541 goals.
Mikita remains the only NHL player in history to win the Art Ross (scoring champion), Hart (MVP) and Lady Byng (sportsmanship) trophies in the same season, and he accomplished the feat in consecutive years in 1967 and 1968. He became the first player to have his jersey retired by the Blackhawks in 1980, and was inducted into the hockey Hall of Fame three years later.
“He embodied the Chicago Blackhawks,” team president John McDonough said.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called Mikita “one of the greatest players in NHL history and a Chicago icon,” and highlighted his work to improve the game.
“He designed the distinctive helmet he donned later in his career, when that still was a rarity,” Bettman said in a statement. “He curved his stick blade to an extent previously unthinkable, causing his shot to do tricks. He utterly transformed his playing style in his prime, going from one of the league’s most penalized players to one of its most gentlemanly.”
Mikita’s relationship with the Blackhawks deteriorated over time, but the franchise reached out to him after longtime owner William Wirtz died in 2007 and his son, Rocky, took over. The return of Mikita and Hull was a key moment in the transformation of the Blackhawks from one of the NHL’s worst franchises to among the best run organizations in sports.
“There are no words to describe our sadness over Stan’s passing,” Rocky Wirtz said. “He meant so much to the Chicago Blackhawks, to the game of hockey, and to all of Chicago.”
The 5-foot-9 Mikita patrick mahomes stitched jersey , who was born in Czechoslovakia and moved to Canada in 1948, was just 18 when he joined a mediocre Blackhawks franchise in 1959. He made his debut at home against mighty Montreal, and his first faceoff came against Jean Beliveau during his prime.
“I was still in a daze when I went out to take that faceoff against a legend like Beliveau, who was around 6-foot-5 and a towering presence on the ice,” Mikita wrote in his 2011 book, “Forever a Blackhawk.”
“He had to outweigh me by 60 pounds. The faceoff was in Montreal’s end. I looked up at him from the circle and wound up staring at his belly button. That’s how tall he was. My knees were shaking. My head was spinning. Somehow I got my stick down and managed to get the puck to our point man. Don’t ask me who it was. I was too nervous to remember names.”
But Mikita showed steady improvement at the start of his career, helping Chicago develop into one of the most feared teams in the league. He had eight goals and 18 assists in his first full season, and then helped the Blackhawks to their first NHL title in 23 years.
The 1960-61 team, coached by Rudy Pilous, went 29-24-17 in the regular season, finishing third in the NHL. Chicago then upset Beliveau and heavily favored Montreal, and beat Detroit in six games for the championship. Mikita had 19 goals and 34 assists in the regular season, and then added six more goals and five assists in 12 playoff games.
Mikita and the Blackhawks played for the Stanley Cup again in 1962, but lost to Toronto in six games. They also lost in the finals in 1965, 1971 and 1973 despite continued postseason success for Mikita, who tops the franchise playoff lists for assists (91) Bo Horvat Jersey , points (150) and games (155).
“I, alongside all who played with him, knew him not only as a great player, but as an even better friend, teammate, husband, father and grandfather,” Hull said in a statement from the team. “I take comfort in knowing we will be forever together in front of the United Center, and I’m honored to now play a part in keeping his legacy alive.”
The Seattle Seahawks would be thrilled if Barkevious Mingo became the new version of what Bruce Irvin was during their championship run 鈥?strong on stopping the run in early downs, a threat as a rusher in passing situations.Doing so would mean Mingo is finally meeting the expectations that came with being the No. 6 overall pick five years ago, which has happened only briefly during his first three stops in the NFL.
Seattle made only a few free agent signings on the defensive side in the offseason and none has the chance to flash as much as Mingo because of what Seattle believes he could add to its revamped defense. And especially in a defensive scheme that is geared even more toward the linebackers with Ken Norton Jr. taking over as defensive coordinator.
"It's definitely finding roles for guys and getting to figure them out and who they are and all that," coach Pete Carroll said. "He has done a lot of stuff, even back in college. Right now, to have him playing outside linebacker and also rushing in the nickel package, it's just the right spot for him. He also has a lot of drop ability in there so we can do some things and we can do some intricate things with him as well. Very lucky to have him."
The strongside linebacker's impact in Seattle's defensive scheme is somewhat limited unless he can be an exceptional pass rusher. Whenever Seattle goes with an extra defensive back it's the strongside linebacker that comes off the field with middle linebacker Bobby Wagner and weakside linebacker K.J. Wright remaining on it.
The way to stay on the field in that position is get to the quarterback. It's what Irvin did so well during his four seasons with Seattle and what the Seahawks haven't been able to fully replicate since he left for Oakland in free agency.
Seattle wanted to see just how much Mingo could affect the game from that position in the preseason opener against Indianapolis so he was on the field with second- and third-team players with the specific task of rushing the passer. While the rest of Seattle's defensive starters were resting, Mingo was recording one of Seattle's three sacks.
"I believe in my ability to the highest degree and I know when it's time to get to the quarterback I know I can do that Womens Kris Russell Jersey ," he said.
Mingo was part of an underperforming first-round draft class. Only three of the top 17 picks in that draft 鈥?Lane Johnson, Ezekiel Ansah and Sheldon Richardson 鈥?have been voted to a Pro Bowl. Mingo has been lumped into the group of disappointments along with Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel and Dion Jordan.
Part of Mingo's trouble is a lack of stability. He was drafted by the Browns, but Cleveland was in chaos during his time there. He was traded to New England shortly before the start of the 2016 regular season and lasted just one year after starting one game with the Patriots. He spent last year with Indianapolis, recording a career-high 32 tackles, but was again without a home after the season.
Seattle made a simple offer: prove he could set the edge against the run and when called upon, get some sacks.
"First off, I've been on a team that's had a lot of turnover from the get go. So there were different coaches there," Mingo said. "I feel like some of the other coaches, maybe it's been a lack of communication between us and we haven't gotten the play style ... down, and that position wasn't right for me. I feel like this thing here, and being with these coaches and players, it's the right fit."
